Reference Photo Tips

SETUP

  • Background does not matter. Take on flat ground (preferably paved surface, if not then in ring. Never on grass)

  • Camera should be at least 200mm focal length (generally 200-300mm works best)

  • Shoot with narrow enough aperture so that entire horse is in focus

  • Take photos on a sunny day. Avoid harsh mid-day lighting.

  • Please send RAW files- no need to edit. The more photos, the better as I often piece together multiple photos

THE HORSE

  • Horse should be in the tack you want them painted in. If in a bridle, put reins over the neck and use a lead rope for handling

  • Horse must be standing correctly! The hind leg closest to the camera should be the one extended further back

  • It’s okay if the lead rope/people are in the photos, just try not to have the handler block the horse

EXTRA TIPS

  • Expression is key in the photos– have the handlers hold a plastic bag or treats to get the horse’s attention. Another trick I use is to bring a small mirror and hold it in front on the horse

  • Take a bunch of photos! The more the better. I often shoot the same shot just with a slightly different angle to the sun so that I have choices in how the horse is lit.
